Diagnostics: Functional Lab Testing

Functional Lab Testing

Full diagnostic laboratory testing is available at White Rock Naturopathic, and includes:

Comprehensive Diagnostics & Lab Testing List

Some of them are newer clinical laboratory tests designed to help the doctor identify relationships within the complex design of the body that create the imbalances and diseases in other organ systems. Again, the focus is on health promotion and lifestyle treatments that are more likely to cure the problem, thus reducing the need for long term symptomatic care.

Allergy Testing

Complete testing is available at White Rock Naturopathic for both environmental (seasonal) allergies as well as food allergies, including skin scratch tests for environmental allergies, and IgE/ IgG (ELISA) serum testing for food and environmental allergies.

Treatments involves either identification and avoidance, management or de-sensitization using Low Dose Antigen Therapy (LDA Therapy).

Treating food allergies can help with many conditions including:

• Asthma
• A.D.D.
• Eczema and psoriasis
• Chronic fatigue syndrome
• Colitis and Crohn’s
• Irritable bowel syndrome
• Multiple sclerosis

SIBO Testing

SIBO stands for Small Intestinal Bacterial Overgrowth, and can occur when the small intestine has become chronically infected with an overgrowth of bacteria.

Symptoms vary but may include bloating, belching, cramps, constipation, diarrhea, heartburn, nausea, food sensitivities, headaches, joint pain, fatigue, skin rashes, respiratory issues, mood changes, eczema, fatty stools, iron deficiency, flatulence, abdominal pain and vitamin B12 deficiency.

While SIBO is a condition that develops in the gastrointestinal system, it can also impact our health in other more systemic ways, such as chronic fatigue, muscle aches, fibromyalgia, “brain fog”, breathing disturbances and bad breath, to name a few.

Testing involves doing a breath test in the convenience of your own home. Upon receiving the test kit, instructions will be provided to eat a special prep diet for 24 hours prior to the exam. It takes 3 hours to complete, and provides an assessment of how the bacteria in your intestinal system are functioning.

Functional Genomics

Functional Genomics

Understanding one’s genetic makeup allows for an individualized approach to medicine, both in terms of susceptibility, prevention and treatment.

Every individual has some degree of genetic variation in their DNA code, such as SNPs (pronounced snips, or single nucleotide polymorphisms), which are genomic variants at a single base position in the DNA. This in turn affects the genetic instructions for the synthesis of various proteins and enzymes that are necessary for the healthy function of our body. Including our circulation, immune system, mental/emotional health, ability to control inflammation, detoxification, the aging process, etc.

A variety of environmental factors (epigenetics) can further influence the gene expression, such as diet, nutrient excess or deficiency, pathogens, drugs, chemical/radiation, stress, aging, etc.

While traditional genetics looks for potential disease risk, functional genomics involves testing to identify one’s unique SNPs, reviewing one’s current labwork, and analyzing which epigenetic factors can be utilized (i.e. diet, supplements, lifestyle habits) to maximize one’s health in an individualized manner.

Testing first begins with ordering one’s own Ancestry.com test kit and completing that process. Once the results are received, the raw data (which is provided in digital form) is then uploaded to various different functional genomic database platforms to be processed for one’s own individualized recommendations and functional genomic protocol. Metabolomix Micronutrient Testing

Metabolomix+ : A Non-Invasive Personalized Nutritional Assessment

The Metabolomix+ is a unique combination of nutritional tests that provides an analysis of key nutritional biomarkers. A first morning void (FMV) urine collection, with optional add-on bloodspot finger stick and inner cheek (buccal) swab, the Metabolomix+ nutritional test is a non-invasive, patient-friendly way to assess the functional need for antioxidants, B-vitamins, minerals, digestive support, fatty acids, and amino acids. Insights gained from the Metabolomix+ nutritional test allows clinicians to target nutritional therapies to meet the precise needs of their patients.

Common indications for testing include:

  • Mood Disorders
  • Mitochondrial Dysfunction
  • Fatigue
  • Chronic Stress
  • Inflammation

The Metabolomix+ Profile report categorizes results into several metabolic areas:

COMPONENTS

    • Organic Acids (urine)
    • Malabsorption and Dysbiosis Markers are metabolites produced by the gastrointestinal microbiome

  • Cellular Energy & Mitochondrial Markers are biomarkers of carbohydrate and fatty acid metabolism, and the citric acid (Kreb’s) cycle
  • Vitamin Markers are specific analytes used to assess functional levels of vitamin cofactors
  • Neurotransmitter Metabolites are downstream byproducts of epinephrine, norepinephrine, serotonin and dopamine
  • Toxin & Detoxification Markers relate to certain toxic metabolites and the body’s detoxification capacity
  • NEW Oxalate Markers relate to kidney stone formation, oxidative stress and metabolic dysfunction
  • Amino Acids (urine)
  • Essential Amino Acids must be derived from dietary sources
  • Nonessential Amino Acids are synthesized by the body
  • Intermediary Metabolites are byproducts of amino acid metabolism
  • Dietary Peptide Related Markers can indicate incomplete protein breakdown
  • Oxidative Stress Markers (urine) include the oxidative damage markers lipid peroxides and 8-OHdG

+ COMPONENTS

  • Essential and Metabolic Fatty Acids – Bloodspot (if selected as add-on profile)
  • Omega 3 Fatty Acids are essential for brain function and cardiovascular health and are anti-inflammatory
  • Omega 6 Fatty Acids are involved in the balance of inflammation
  • Omega 9 Fatty Acids are important for brain growth, nerve cell myelin, and reducing inflammation
  • Saturated Fatty Acids are involved in liproprotein metabolism and adipose tissue inflammation
  • Monounsaturated Fats include omega 7 fats and unhealthy trans fats
  • Delta-6 Desaturase Activity assesses efficiency of this enzyme to metabolize omega 6’s and omega 3’s
  • Cardiovascular Risk includes specific ratios and the Omega 3 Index
  • Nutrient and Toxic Elements – urine (if selected as add-on profile) assesses 20 toxic and 15 mineral elements

  • COMT (V158M)

GI Effects (Genova Diagnostics) (Comprehensive Diagnostic Stool Analysis (CDSA / GI Map)

The GI Effects® Comprehensive Stool Profile is a group of advanced stool tests that provide immediate, actionable clinical information for the management of gastrointestinal health. Utilizing cutting-edge technologies and biomarkers, this profile offers valuable insight into digestive function, intestinal inflammation, and the intestinal microbiome.

Biomarkers are grouped and scored in 5 key areas relating to GI function:

  1. Maldigestion
  2. Inflammation
  3. Dysbiosis
  4. Metabolite Imbalance
  5. Infection

Genova is the first laboratory to introduce an Inflammation-Associated Dysbiosis score and a Methane Dysbiosis score by incorporating their latest microbiome data analysis. These new patterns of dysbiosis can help differentiate treatment interventions. Information about the patient’s microbiome is organized into 3 areas:

  1. Abundance
  2. Dysbiosis
  3. Balance
