ADD: What is it?

Symptoms of inattention, distractability, and poor working memory are often referred to as ADD symptoms.

There might be signs of:

  • Not paying attention when spoken to, having trouble focusing, not paying attention to details, or making thoughtless mistakes with, say, schoolwork;
  • Difficulties planning activities and tasks;
  • Avoidance of, aversion to, or unwillingness to begin tasks requiring sustained mental effort;
  • Being quickly distracted by sounds or other stimuli; having trouble remembering simple tasks;
  • The inability to wait one’s turn; excessive talking; blurting out responses before inquiries have been fully answered;
  • Interrupting and intruding on others’ discussions and/or activities; fidgeting with one’s hands or feet or shifting in one’s seat;
