“Homeopathy…cures a larger percentage of cases than any other method of treatment, and is beyond all doubt safer and more economical, and the most complete medical science.” – Mahatma Gandhi

Did You Know?

  • In france, more than 11,000 physicians (~42%) use homeopathy daily in their practice; while 70% support its role in medicine.
  • It is the second most practiced medicine in the world, following conventional medicine.
  • The British Royal Family have their own homeopathic physician & have used homeopathy since 1830.

A great teacher and friend of mine, Chris Sowton ND, describes homeopathic practice as follows:

“it’s like trying to find a disturbance in an electrical field. You can’t see the disturbance directly, so you have to try to find it by examining all the characteristic patterns that appear in all aspects of the person’s life, many of which are related to these subtle but powerful disturbances.

Some of the patterns are physiological, like sleep position, body temperature regulation, and food cravings. Others are directly expressed in the body as symptoms. These are all important, but we are seeking for the disturbance itself, rather than chasing after all the peripheral symptoms and trying to relieve them.

Once the disturbance is “seen” (which can take a while) the remedy is given which matches that pattern of disturbance most closely, ie: can both create it and cure it…this is homeopathy.

These disturbances cannot always be completely eliminated, but they can be diluted and weakened over time. As they are weakened the person starts to feel better on all levels. It’s not so much about giving a person tools to cope better, it’s more about freeing them up to use the tools that are already within reach.

[One approach that allows individuals] to get a felt sense of the disturbance they are saddled with is by watching themselves on videotape, particularly when they are talking about dreams, obsessions, addictions, or fears. It is as if they can sense something operating there that is “not them”. Once they start to sense how it is operating, they are already moving towards their truer selves. Typically I will make a DVD of particular parts of a session so people can watch themselves in action.” — from: http://dreamreading.ca/dreamreading/Homeopathy.html

I have followed Dr. Sowton’s example in this approach, and have found it equally insightful, and transformative, not to mention a healing in its own right.

Homeopathy is an advanced natural healing science whose tremendous value has been proven for almost two hundred years and on every continent.  Homeopathy can be effective in chronic (long-term) conditions, as well as acute (short-term) illnesses of adults, children and animals.  Homeopathic medicines are non-toxic and have no side effects.  They act curatively and preventively by raising your general level of health.  In homeopathy, very small doses of plant, mineral and animal substances are chosen based on a healing principle called The Law of Similars.  This law states that any substance that can produce symptoms on a healthy person can cure those same symptoms in someone who is sick.

Around the year 1800, the German physician Samuel Hahnemann, rediscovered this ancient healing principle and recognized that it was a fundamental law of nature.  Hahnemann verified and developed the Law of Similars into the homeopathic system of medicine.

Today, homeopathy has achieved widespread acceptance in many parts of the world and in England enjoys the patronage of the Royal family.  Modern homeopathy has seen unprecedented growth world wide, with exciting new developments in remedies and techniques.

Homeopathy is a truly holistic approach to health; one that emphasizes people rather than diseases  Homeopathy recognizes that each person responds uniquely to the forces of their heredity and environment. Mental, emotional and physical symptoms are the indications of the body’s effort to defend and heal itself.  Symptoms present a visible image of the invisible defense system.

In order to discover the unique workings of your defense mechanism, the homeopathic physician will seek to obtain as full an image as possible of your total pattern of symptoms. After careful consideration, a single homeopathic medicine is then chosen from a comprehensive list of over 3500+ homeopathically prepared remedies, for its ability to cause a very similar symptom pattern. This is quite an endeavor, but sophisticated computer data bases, historical tests and modern techniques make the task much more accurate.

If the remedy is correctly selected, it works to activate the defense mechanism as a whole. When a person becomes well through homeopathy they find improvements on all levels of their health. A balancing of the whole person is achieved.
If the remedy given is incorrect, essentially nothing at all happens – the patient is neither worse nor better as a whole even despite minor changes. In that case, another remedy is selected.

Progress is carefully monitored at six to eight weekly intervals or longer as needed. The follow up interviews are not as long as the initial interview and as time goes on the interval between follow ups gets significantly longer.

  1. Like cures like: The substance most effective in curing illness is one that is able to cause symptoms very similar to those found in the person being treated.
  2. Symptoms indicate healing: Symptoms represent the body´s effort to heal itself.  Therefore, they are stimulated to complete the curative process.
  3. Homeopathic remedies are based on provings: Medicinal substances are given to healthy people in small doses to assess their physiological and psychological effects.  These “provings” continue until symptoms are elicited and the medicinal potential of the substance is revealed.
  4. Knowledge of medicines is refined by clinical application: Symptoms cured clinically that may not be found in the provings add to the knowledge of the remedy.
  5. The totality of the symptoms is considered: Mental, emotional, and physical patterns are all taken into account as each person expresses imbalance through mind as well as body.
  6. A single remedy is given: One homeopathic medicine is chosen to match the totality of the patient’s symptoms.
  7. A minimum of doses is given: The individual’s healing powers are encouraged by the least amount of medicine necessary to initiate a curative response.

The homeopathic medicines, called remedies, are prepared according to a method unique to homeopathy.  The remedies are manufactured by licensed homeopathic pharmaceutical companies according to strict standards.  Over 2500 substances provide the source materials.

Knowledge about each remedy does not rely on either folklore or biochemical experiments, though it may draw information from these and any other source.  The main source of knowledge about homeopathic remedies is obtained from human experiments called provings. In provings, a group of people take very small doses of the substance that is being tested for a period of days or weeks. The subjects record in great detail their mental, emotional and physical changes from the test substance.  When this information is combined with other sources of knowledge, especially the study of successful clinical application of the remedy, a clear picture emerges of the full range of action of each substance.

Samuel Hahnemann also developed a way to enhance the healing power of the remedies while eliminating toxic side effects. The medicinal substance is rendered into a liquid form. There are then two primary steps in the production of a homeopathic remedy, known as dilution and succussion. In the first step, termed dilution, the pharmacist adds a portion of the liquid tincture to a measured amount of distilled water. In the second step, called succussion, this dilute solution is struck repeatedly against a solid surface.  The fluid is then discarded and more liquid is added. These two steps will be repeated over and over to the desired dilution.

The remedies are prepared by hand for the lower dilutions and then by machine, of which there are several types, for production of the higher dilutions.  Remedies manufactured in this way are called potencies. When we speak of a high potency remedy we refer to one that has gone through many cycles of dilution and succussion.  Special sugar granules are moistened with the liquid potency for easy administration, though sometimes remedies may be prescribed in liquid form.

The clinical experience of thousands of homeopathic physicians for almost two hundred years has repeatedly shown the remarkable healing power of the high homeopathic dilutions.  It is generally observed that high potency (more dilute) remedies have a more rapid and and deeper action than low potencies (less dilute).  The fineness of homeopathic dilutions has been the source of great controversy throughout homeopathic history.  Although there is a vast amount of clinical experience supporting the efficacy of high dilution homeopathic medicines, there is also an increasing body of scientific research proving their potent biological action.  More recently, independent research has indicated that homeopathic dilutions have unique, measurable physical properties.

Now that science has affirmed the question “do they act?”, the next question will be “how do they act”? Though there are many theories about how the remedies act, modern physics now has some explanations. The seeming paradox of remedies acting beyond the point where there are any actual molecules left after diluting, has been recently elucidated by a variety of studies throughout the world since 1995 — clarifying special Quantum Electrodynamic processes occurring only in dilute solutions of water or other dipolar solvents. Essentially, some think that the process of shaking and diluting creates clusters of water molecules aligned with associated electromagnetic fields. When there is resonance between the remedy “vibration” and the patient’s symptoms, the structure of water changes and improves all the chemical reactions involved in bodily processes. (Bill Gray, MD, Homeopathy: Science or Myth? North Atlantic Books, Berkeley, 2000)

Homeopaths observe that virtually all substances — plant, mineral, or animal — may produce symptoms if given carefully to sensitive individuals or in larger quantities to less sensitive people. These symptoms are painstakingly catalogued in Materia Medicas, which are then elaborately analyzed (in modern days, by computer) to match the symptom properties of substances to symptom pictures of patients.

The basic concept is that symptoms are manifestations of the organism trying to heal. In acute disease, the fever, malaise, pain, and diarrhea or discharges are attempts to kill the offending organism and expel the toxins while encouraging the person to slow down and rest. In chronic disease, the symptoms are attempts to heal which are not succeeding — thus, they are chronic.

In the homeopathic perspective, symptoms are any limitations of freedom, whether mental, emotional, or physical.

Is homeopathy just placebo effect?
There certainly is considerable placebo effect arising from the holistic nature and thoroughness of a well-taken homeopathic interview. However, homeopathy is very effective in babies and animals who are not swayed under this effect. And over 89 carefully designed double-blind clinical and laboratory studies have been published proving its effectiveness. Tissue and cell cultures also respond quantitatively to exposure to remedies. ( Bill Gray, MD, Homeopathy: Science or Myth? North Atlantic Books, Berkeley, 2000)

What is the homeopathic intake like?
The task of the homeopath and patient is to create a full picture of all the unique and even peculiar aspects of the person’s disposition along with the disease and its progression. Looking at mental, emotional, and physical aspects together, an effort is made to grasp all the ways in which the vital force is already trying to heal.

The focus of the interview is on how this is uniquely being expressed by you as an individual. The remedy is matched to the unique patterns and symptoms and ideally acts to improve that effort, enabling cure of even long term chronic disease.

How can I participate?
You don’t have to ‘believe’ in homeopathic remedies in order for them to work (they work just as effectively with babies and animals). But in order to come up with the correct remedy and for the treatment to continue to act, your cooperation and commitment is necessary. You can help in the following areas:

  1. Clarity – Be clear and complete about your symptoms on all levels.
  2. Noting Changes – After you take the remedy, note changes. Keeping a weekly journal can be helpful and bring it to your follow-up visits. Note general and specific changes.
  3. Avoiding Antidotes – Certain elements can affect homeopathic treatment for some individuals by diluting, interfering with, or simply antidoting the remedy action. To simplify a list of such antidotes, you can think of antidotes as being anything that has a strong smell, such as coffee, essential oils, camphor, moth balls, perfumes, or certain spices. It is best to avoid as well as possible anything that has a strong scent while undergoing homeopathic treatment
  4. Commitment and Patience – A commitment to a long-term process with patience is really a commitment to your long-term well being. Homeopathic remedies and treatment are not like regular drugs in their effect. It can be sometimes take some time after you have taken a homeopathic remedy to see a positive effect so patience is required.
  5. Communicate – Above all, communicate any concerns or questions you may have.

What if further research or consultation on my case is necessary?
After the homeopathic consultation is finished, it may be necessary to do more intensive research, and in that instance the remedy will not be given the same day. This is all part of the carefulness involved in good homeopathy.
If the remedy is prescribed at the interview, it means that the practitioner has been fortunate enough to clearly see the correct remedy, and is confident in giving it at this point.

What happens if a wrong remedy is given?
Generally nothing at all. Remedies are non-toxic. The remedy must resonate with the person, otherwise nothing happens. Sometimes symptoms change subtly without much overall progress. This signifies a remedy is close but not exact. We are looking for more profound change and this can help to clarify the more correct remedy.

What is the primary method for homeopathic treatment?
True constitutional homeopathy does not treat specific diseases, but treats individuals. Hence a detailed understanding of the patient is fundamental for a correct prescription to be made. The homeopath must come to a very complete understanding of an individual in a relatively short space of time.  The questioning process is the very essence of forming and developing this understanding.

The homeopath needs to be an acute listener and observer – her/his job is primarily to get your symptom picture, and match this to a remedy.  We simply want to hear your story, listen sympathetically without making any value judgments, and match this information to the right remedy.

To match a ‘remedy’ to an individual, the homeopath must know all the person’s limitations clearly; this includes mental, emotional, and physical levels, general energy, effects of environment, causative factors, etc.

How does one evaluate a curative response?
Homeopaths have, through over 200 years of experience, developed very sophisticated means of evaluating curative responses, and have “laws and principles of cure.”
You want to see the problems you have come with clear up, and they should. Always keep in mind that our perspective is you in totality. You, also, have to see improvement in the context of the amount of stresses and other influences in your life. Improvement will occur on physical, emotional, mental and general energy levels. Observe and report these general changes as well as specific ones.

What is the homeopathic process in more complex or chronic cases, and how long does this take?
In more complex cases, homeopathic treatment is like peeling away ‘layers of an onion.’  Briefly, this means that we build up layers of symptoms or pathology as a response to certain stresses and influences we go through in life.  The ‘layers’ are laid down and can be ‘peeled’ away effectively with homeopathic remedies.

During the course of treatment, old sets of symptoms may come up; but with each consecutive remedy you become healthier, and the symptoms will not be as severe as in the past. A new recurrence of an old set of symptoms will be the indication for a new remedy to be given.

So in long-term deep or complex chronic problems, the curative process may be more gradual, and long term interaction more necessary. For these situations, many years of homeopathic treatment (with long intervals in between) may be necessary, especially in those who have had their limitations for many years.

How many appointments are necessary?
In the beginning (i.e. the first 6 months to 2 years) visits may be more frequent and will taper off as you become healthier. We feel we need to initially interact with you more frequently in order to effectively work with you and to, as importantly, evaluate your progress. Yet, we are not insensitive to the cost of treatment, and do not wish to make this too much of a burden.  A happy medium can be reached.

If a remedy has acted curatively after the initial follow-up, even in deep and complex cases, we may not want to see you for another 3-6 months.  This is because the remedy has brought your system in balance, and in our experience, this state can last for a long time (even years).  We also need to wait until the next ‘layer’ clearly comes up.  This is the time to have a renewed faith in your body’s healing abilities.

How can just one tiny dose do anything, or last so long?
The remedies are highly potentised – they are prepared in what is called a potentized dilution and dropped onto tiny lactose granules to make ingestion easier. More importantly, they catalyze, or trigger a response by the body on an energetic level, rather than effecting some chemical change. What ultimately happens after the remedy is taken is that your own innate regulating and healing system is stimulated. The remedy helps the body develop a natural, positive healing momentum which continues to gain strength and thereby eliminates disease. Should you want to gain a more in-depth understanding of this fascinating and effective energetic process, please refer to any of the introductory books on the reading list.

What happens if my symptoms seem to come back after I have gotten better?
If you initially have a strongly curative response to a remedy, and then a relapse seems to occur, we usually recommend to wait another 2-3 weeks in order to see if your system doesn’t  rebalance itself.  If any symptoms come on strongly, notify the office. If the rebalancing does not occur after this 2-3 week period, then a repeat of the remedy may be necessary. In that case an appointment or phone call would be appropriate.

Don’t get disappointed or discouraged at this point and feel that homeopathy is not working for you – this is just a temporary, and many times, expected phase of getting you to a consistent level of good health. This situation may also indicate that a new remedy is needed as a new ‘layer’ of symptoms from the past has come up, and needs to be rectified.
