What is PRP therapy?

In platelet-rich plasma therapy (PRP), the body’s own cells are removed, processed, and reintroduced to treat or prevent disease. During PRP treatments, a small amount of blood is collected and spun in a centrifuge machine to separate the platelets from the red blood cells.

Your plasma is a liquid part of your blood that is mostly made up of water and protein. Blood cells, platelets, and white blood cells move through it. A platelet is a type of blood cell that causes your blood to clot. Healing is also facilitated by them.

A doctor may use platelet-rich plasma (PRP) to treat tendons, ligaments, muscles, joints, and skin injuries. The platelet-rich plasma is separated from the rest of the blood by a machine after blood is drawn from your body.

Your doctor will then numb the area of your body that will receive PRP injections. A needle is used by the doctor to inject plasma into the area of your body that needs treatment once you are numb. During treatment, platelets break down and release growth factors, which help cells repair and regenerate. It is believed that this triggers the healing process in your body.

What conditions are successfully treated with PRP?

Injections of platelet-rich plasma have been found to significantly speed up the healing process, and they are becoming increasingly common in cases of rotator cuff tears, Achilles tendon ruptures, and soft-tissue injuries.

It has also been demonstrated that PRP improves function and reduces pain in people with conditions such as tennis elbow and golfer’s elbow caused by tendonitis and chronic tendinosis.

PRP injections have the advantage of reducing the need for anti-inflammatories or stronger medications such as opioids. Additionally, since PRP injections are created from your own blood, your body will not reject or react negatively to them, so side effects are very limited.

Increasingly, they are used for cosmetic procedures as well. PRP injections are used by dermatologists and hair replacement experts to treat androgenic alopecia, a type of hair loss that affects both men and women. PRP treatments are also available for the face from some dermatologists, you might have heard them called “vampire facials.”

When to consider a PRP solution as your Prolotherapy Option?

There is evidence that PRP and prolotherapy stimulate natural healing. Both can be effective, so both should be considered when planning a treatment plan for connective tissue repair. However, PRP prolotherapy may be more appropriate when the tissue or joint has degenerated, when osteoarthritis is present, or when the problem is older and more chronic.

In prolotherapy, platelet-rich plasma is combined with growth factors to provide both irritation (concentrated platelets are aggravating) and healing. A tendon sheath or muscle injury may also benefit from platelet-rich plasma rather than dextrose; dextrose is sometimes used here, but not typically.

Who is a good candidate for PRP therapy?

Several musculoskeletal conditions can be treated with Platelet Rich Plasma, which has proven to be extremely effective. A PRP treatment can benefit anyone and there are no bad candidates, but some will respond better than others. Everyone, regardless of their health, can benefit from PRP therapy. You are more likely to respond if you are in good health.  Smokers, diabetics, or those with other chronic diseases like thyroid disease or cardiorespiratory illness are less likely to respond.

In spite of the fact that there are no restrictions regarding one’s blood group, those with low platelet counts or bleeding disorders should be screened by a physician. PRP therapy has no age restrictions and it can be an excellent option for any individual with a condition that may benefit from it.
